Prologue
Well, I quite managed to make a come back of sorts, and was happy to see one more than half a dozen comments on my previous post. Well I surely deserve a pat on my back ;). So I have decided to continue my journey in the quest to become a versatile blogger. So it’s no more philosophy and no more cricket, well that doesn’t leave me with much of a choice, so I have decided its going to be bollywood this time. You can’t blame me for my lame thinking.
I am certainly not a bollywood basher, someone who hates the songs, running around trees, the melodrama, the emotion, the action (I could go on). Well I love bollywood as much as I love Hollywood, Its just that certain movies leave some impressions on you, that you occasionally tend to become judgmental and quick to shift loyalties.
Without wasting much of your time, Let me get straight to something, which has left an impression on me, an impression of a different kind. The most talented yet confused director RGV. I thought I would not do this, but the hype surrounding his latest movie Phoonk, and the very fact that, I managed to catch yet another RGV movie on the very first day couldn’t stop me from choosing to write about this consistently inconsistant Director-Writer.

I have come across countless blogs, interviews, articles, where RGV has been bashed, sometimes unpardonable, unethical, unsympathetic and ruthlessly by so called film critics, Well a bad movie attracts criticism, but with RGV criticism comes from all corners, Professional Critics, Amateur bloggers, my neighbor who watches a movie once in 6 months (that too a RGV Movie), colleagues, office boys…….RGV commends that kind of admiration, only which our crickets were used to for many years now..
I keep thinking about this time and again, like most Indian movie-buffs, on RGV’s consistently inconsistence approach to film making. How can a same person come up with movies like Company & Sarkar on one-hand and movies like Aag & Phoonk on the other. It is understood & obvious for artistes to fail occasionally; but they fail with grace, with stature, (in cricketing terms – Form is temporary; Class is permanent) however when RGV fails, he makes a fool of himself. That's what makes it so difficult to understand him. But it is worth trying, rather than ridicule and bash him up.
TRIVIA: Ram Gopal Varma becomes the first director in Hindi cinema to have three releases in three successive months in the same year. Sarkar Raj released in June, Contract in July and Phoonk in Aug 08
I am amazed at the speed at which RGV churns out movies out of his FACTORY is no less than the speed at which a refilling unit refills Soft drink bottles. The end result is Phoonk, the movie vanishes without a trace at the box office (this is no black magic)
People attribute this to RGV’s egoistic nature, (read his blogs/interviews), lack of vision, too many movies, some call him a psycho, and some call him a fool. The question is, “Who is a fool here?” Well the answer is simple and unanimous.
RGV is someone who has the vision to predict the outcome of a movie halfway into the production, and yet would not make any effort to change things, not because he is incapable of; but because he doesn’t want to. Yes, RGV is highly intellectual individual who not only knows to make movies, but also knows how to make mistakes and more importantly when to make them. Any of his half a dozen Underworld/Horror movies have not cost him more than 5 Crore of rupees. (Considering Sarkar Raj is a 30 Crore Movie)
A newcomer/B-Grade actor, half a dozen weird camera angles an old abandoned house, with a dozen chase sequences and horrific sound effects, a perfect potboiler for an RGV Movie, on which RGV himself has invested the least possible amount of time; because according to him it’s simply not worth it. Yes, it is wise to know where to invest your time and where not to, ditto with RGV. Not every movie is made with same intentions and same passion and same intelligence. Not because he cannot, but because he doesn’t want to. Half of RGV movies made today are out of obligations, obligations of all kinds, Financial Crisis, troublesome careers, boredom, arrogance, irresponsibility, but what we fail to realize is that, with the exception of his disastrous aag, all his other movies have managed to either break even or make marginal profits, (considering the low budgets). Is RGV squandering his brand & goodwill he has earned ? Only time will tell. Until then his movies will still continue to create the hype they normally do, and manage to earn him what he needs ( name, fame, obligations, arrogance, intelligence & Stupidity)
After Watching Phoonk, I certainly realized that I am under no obligation to watch anymore RGV movies, Inspite of answering so many “WHY” Questions, I am still clueless about these from his latest flick.
1) Why did the Dolls/Idols in the movie manage to bag more screen space than the actors ?
2) Why was RGV so stingy while picking the starcast of the movie, and ended up spending more on the idols/dolls, without a doubt I can bet the movie had more idols/dolls than actors ?
3) What was the role of the crow in the movie; male lead? baddie? Guest Appearance? Poor Editing ?
4) Is the maid going to be RGVs next pin-up girl after bagging the maximum screen space, amongst the actors
5) Why were the dream sequences in the movies scarier than the actual ones, (got to do anything with RGVs Nightmares ?)
I wish I could go on……but I certainly do not want to relive those moments.
PS: I truly admire RGV, I respect him for taking Indian Cinema beyond Karan Johars & Karwa Chauths, for getting rid of dancing sequences and ugly item numbers. He has every right to take people for a ride, as he is in the business of film making and cashing in on brand RGV FACTORY. It’s now up to the people and stand up and take those RGV Films seriously which RGV himself takes seriously.

Dude..
i regard RGV as a 'cut above' director with a style.. n most of the other good things u sed about him...he has a signature delivery which most of us love in his mafia movies and hate in horror movies...
but atleast he churns out horror movies! ya...maybe none of them are 'the exrocist' material.. but atleast they are!
horror has really not been a hot genre for Bollywood since the ramsay brothers got distracted (or went broke?) i really dont remember anyone else making horror films with this frequency! so till the time someone else comepetes with him, am gonna say that atleast...atleast he is a 'andho mein kana raja' as far as horror films go.
honestly i dont really understand when ppl say tht his movies (such as darna mana/zaroori hai, vaastu?, phoonk, bhoot) are pathetic!
i mean.. what else were you expecting man!?? if u really wana see a zombie go dig a ramsay creation! at least this guy is giving a fresh perspective... n not jumping into the 'formula' for which we bashed the ramsay brothers 2 decades ago! (remember Raat movie in 1990)?
ok. now as for your questions regarding phoonk movie..
1. yes, lot of dolls n animal statues were CLOSED UP. but i think tht was partly for the reason tht he wanted to have a diferent style. (he does tht in every pic...even in sarkar raj. he had weird camera angles... sometimes camera moving back n forth on a fixed subject etc)
and partly maybe cz lifeless statues, at night, do give a spooky luk!
2. i guess close starcast gives a compact n intense viewing experience..audience dusnt get any respite n all they see are the same faces again n again with standard background theme going on (like 'govinda govinda' in sarkar raj :P)
3. hehehehehe i thot the crow was high on weed :P
4. dude.. pls dont say anything to the maid. i thot she was hot..dusky n dark eyes n all ;) u know my type .hahahah
5. dream sequence were made scary for the same reason tht he dint wana have those zombies running around i the house in real life..tht wud kill the real-ness? of the movie! in dreams u can do anything n stil get away wid it!!
bytheway, is the male actor from telugu movies?? i thot his performance was pretty decent.
#ra i wonder..do we(Indian Audience) are growing by age and still indulge in kid's play..or still have mentality of 7-8 year old child....
No wonder .. extra sweet romantic movies or same type of horror (Horrible ) movies are made by same directors/producers over years again and again.. stupid idiot vulgar things in the movie are termed as "Comedy" and becomes Kingg..
And no wonder people like RGV or Chopra's are making same kind of movies again and again... bcoz its the audience..who indulge in those things.... and says "dil mange more"
Its sad to see .empty seats in .better movies like "Mumbai Meri Jaan" on very second day...
People don't want to think or they have forgotten that there is something more meaningful which they can use above their forehead..they don't want a balance diet...they just want fast food wrapped in delicate foils no matter its bad for their health...
Its no point showing fingers at producers or directors...they always follow one principle..
"Jo bikta hai wahi deekhta hai..i mean deekhata hai "
i see a good alternate career option ahead of u. :) On a more serious note, I guess Ramu is an eccentric director. There's no explanation for the shitty movies like aag he makes and the brilliant ones like Kshana Kshanam.Its good to see u blog all over again.The "why" questions are damn fun.keep the "virgo" creative juices flowin :P
Harsha....
Dont b #@!@#$#% coz i m sure thr ll b more cumin 4m Rammu.. ;) N that crow was the actual, the actual character of the movie. Awesome crow, that awesome granny ...nononononononono n that man with so many antenna's b/w is fingers.. Fun...
Come on Harsha!
He is trying something different all the time. How many would dare do that? When some one try to do something different/ be different, most of the times, he fails! But the class is still there in all Varma's movies.
I am not partial towards any, but seriously, if I want to show a dare to be different movie to any of my German collegues, I go on with Varma's movies. These guys, think that Bollywood is singing, dancing, non sense et al! Now, to prove them wrong, I go with the movies of this person!
If you really wanna bash, go get going with a kind of routine K style stuff.. I am wondering, how you came up with bashing this guy! Is that because of Aag or because of the other review that you probably read from different websites!?
Loads to write, but I cant occupy the complete space here! Any how, my point is simple, he tries to be different, he fails because of trying to be different, but let him be on his own. Once in a while, he really rewrites the history of cinema industry! (Remember the movie Shiva a decade and half ago???)
@Santosh N
I would like to bring one small thing to your notice that, neither have I tried to bash/ridicule RGV, nor was this a movie review. I did mention about critics trying to pounce on RGV at every opportunity they get. I don’t think I am one of them.
I spoke about his inconsistency in his film making, about why everybody loves to hate RGV, If you actually check the post scriptum (P.S.) I have made my stance very clear. I really doubt if you actually read the entire post (May be I should blame myself for the length of the post) I thought the people around me are intelligent enough to distinguish between a plagiarized movie review and an own composition.
Well I also spoke about hits like Sarkar & Company. I have neither asked RGV to stop filming making, nor do I believe that he has lost his magic. As far as Shiva was concerned, that’s history, and we Indians (inc me) continue to rest on our decades ands century old laurels. That’s the very reason I compared RGV movies from this generation.
I have an equally infact even simpler point, Don’t get tricked by the RGV Brand, Its no longer passion that drives his film making, occasionally financial crisis, obligations, arrogance, stupidity takes over. So keep waiting for movies that RGV makes with his absolute dedication, and give the ones a miss that are made out of compulsion.
Thanks for ur time and the comments, Keep coming back !!
@Anonymous
Thanks for the comments. May be you should translate the "#@!@#$#%" for me. :p
Yeah absolutely right, Ramu would keep coming at us but I am not going to take him seriously, until he takes himself seriously. Good to see the scary(funnier) side of the post. :)
@Alekhya
hehe, yeah may be I can give the rediff guys a run for their money, definitely not the others. "Eccentric" is the word, I seriously hope RGV comes out his world full of whims and fancies. Yeah I could have come up with few more “Why” but then I asked myself “Why am I awake @ 3 AM writing abt RGV”. Thanks for the comments :)
@Gajanan
You response seems more like an outcome of your frustration behind the empty halls of “Mumbai Meri Jaan”. Let me tell you I managed to catch the movie amidst a houseful crowd on the 3rd day. The reason behind the empty halls, as one of my friend quoted “Mumbai-tes don’t need to experience life through a movie, they experience it for real everyday.
Coming back to my blog, It’s a good point you have brought forward “jo bikta hain wahi dekhta hain”, but its not always the case, Not every romantic love-story is a hit, not ever offbeat movie is a flop. Yeah may be the other directors make an attempt to sell what people like, but with RGV he makes an attempt to sell what he likes, and sometimes what he himself doesn’t like. :)
Thanks for the comments,
keep coming back !!
@nurav (Are you tricking people into believing that you have a really cool name ? :p)
Dude firstly your comments made a lot of sense, I have a slightly diff opinion , According to me VastuShastra & Bhoot & Raat, where good movies if not great, but DarnaMana/Zarori are not quite in that league. Secondly, I am more worried about the hype created around his movies than the actual movie itself, surprisingly the hype created by People and not the producers. Yeah I certainly don’t want zombies coming out of walls & graveyards .
On a serious Note, Can I ask you to stop stealing the limelight from me on my page :p with your lengthy comments. Go get urself a blog page Its Free !! I still don’t understand your fetish for Dusky women. God save the maid !! :D
Chalo lets take this offline….
BTW The actor is Sudeep a kannada super star.
Hey dear.Cool posts there.Dint know you were that much into blogging.Keep it on.You are good at it:-)
Hey,
I must say u r too funny :) n u do have very good and bright alternate career i.e as film critic yaa...do think abt this..:)i am seriously waiting for next RGV disaster so tat we get to see ur funny comments again...
-Kaveri
I have decide to forgive RGV after I was forced by my friends to watch 'Kismat Konnection'.
So in any case ... The'worst' of Bollywood is yet to come.
@Mohit
Haan bhai, I do blog occasionally, Not as religiously as you do,
Thanks for the comments keep coming back.
@Kaveri
Haha, Thanks, but I happy with my current job. No matter how many more disasters RGV comes up with, this would be is my last disaster, or else people will stop reading my blog, just like they would stop watching his movies one day.
Thanks a lot for the comments.
Keep coming back :)
@Danny
Dude, that was total kismet disconnection.
I couldn’t agree more - “the worst is yet to come”
After RGV I hate you the most (for this post). He made a movie that was anything but a headache (going by the reviews, I don't have to guts to try it) and you not only watched it but wrote a 1000 words essay on it (and I read it, going by the comments a lot many others as well). You sure are following RGV as a blogger :)
Tarun
@Tarun
haha, Thank god, I am behind RGV and not ahead of him. Very true..the length of the post is truely an overkill. I do try to keep it short, but i keep failing.
Thanks for the patience to read through the entire thing.
